Always building

✳ COMPUTER ENGINEERING. SOFTWARE. SYSTEMS.

Good software.
Less friction.

I’m Harsh Modi. From embedded hardware to useful software and the network at home, I build things that make everyday life work better.

Built at work. At home. In the lab.

Different problems. Same instinct:
there has to be a better way.

The systems behind
everyday life.

It’s one thing to design a system.
It’s another to live with it.

Home and the family motel are where my interest in infrastructure gets practical: connectivity, remote access, cameras, storage, and the small decisions that make a setup easier to live with.

IN USE

A network I actually manage.

A UniFi Dream Machine SE sits at the center of my setup, with UniFi U7 access points supporting wireless devices alongside the wired network. It’s a hands-on environment for understanding coverage, connectivity, and how everything fits together.

The interesting part: making the whole setup easier to understand and maintain.

Always something to improve. On the horizon: modernizing legacy storage, extending coverage, and migrating motel telephony. Each starts with the same question: what will make the system more useful?

ALGONA, IOWACURIOUS BY DEFAULT.
HEY, I’M HARSH. YOU MAY KNOW ME AS MARSH.

I like making
things work better.

As a Computer Engineering graduate of Iowa State University, I am drawn to problems that sit between hardware and software. Working across embedded systems, full-stack development, and team leadership has shaped how I approach engineering: start from the constraints, then build something that survives contact with real users.

Outside the lab I play guitar and piano, build games in various engines, and make short films with friends. When I am not coding you will usually find me playing football outside. These interests are not a break from engineering so much as a different way into it, and they keep me approaching problems from more than one angle.

My time at Iowa State has taught me more than technical skill. It has taught me how I operate under pressure, how to collaborate when opinions differ, and how to lead a team toward a shared goal. My work at Erpelding, Voigt & Co. and my roles as a Peer Mentor and President of the Hixson Student Board are where most of that growth actually happened.

Since graduation, my desire to learn more about everything and keep growing as a person hasn't stopped. Every day I desire to keep learning post graduation and as such, I have become an engineer to my own life. I will keep going as far as my journey takes me.

Engineering is a people skill, too.

Technical foundations.
Real teams. Real responsibility.

Start with the friction.
Build something useful.

The stack changes.
The way I think about the work doesn’t.

01

Find the real problem.

Spend time with the workflow. The useful solution starts with understanding what gets in someone’s way.

02

Keep it understandable.

Clear interfaces. Sensible defaults. Tools that make sense to the person using them, every single day.

03

Make the work lighter.

Automate the repetition, connect the loose ends, and leave people with more time for the work that matters.

STILL CURIOUS. STILL BUILDING.

There’s always a
better way to build it.
